今回は、トカゲの代謝性骨疾患についてお話しします。

トカゲの代謝性骨疾患の病態

代謝性骨疾患とは、何かの原因でカルシウムの代謝に支障を起こし骨の異常である病気です。爬虫類における代謝性骨疾患の主な原因は、食事中のカルシウム-リン比の不均衡、紫外線照射不足、不適切な温度管理などが挙げられます。特に成長期のトカゲには、餌として昆虫や植物のみではカルシウム不足が引き起こされやすいです。

トカゲの代謝性骨疾患の臨床症状

低カルシウム血症に伴う症状では食欲不振、活動性の低下、部分的な/全身性の痙攣および振戦、便秘がよくみられます。骨軟化による脊椎/四肢骨/肋骨/顎の変形や病的骨折を起こす可能性もあります。

トカゲの代謝性骨疾患の診断

検査ではX線検査と血液検査を行います。X線検査では骨の透過性、変形や骨折の有無などを評価することができます。血液検査ではカルシウム濃度お測定しますが、代謝性骨疾患の臨床症状がみられても血中のカルシウムの値は正常であることもよくありますので、不適切な飼育条件および特徴的な身体所見に基づいて診断することが多いです。

トカゲの代謝性骨疾患の治療

低カルシウム血症を引き起こして食欲不振や痙攣などが認められる重症例ではカルシウム注射と輸液療法などを行う必要があります。状態の改善がみられ、食欲がある場合にはカルシウム剤を餌に混ぜて治療することもできます。ただし、低カルシウム血症が改善されたとしても、いったん起こった骨に変形は元に戻ることはないです。

 

【Metabolic bone disease in lizards】

Occurrence

Metabolic bone disease (MBD) is one of the most common nutritional disorders in captive reptiles, especially lizards. It is characterized by hypocalcemia caused by deficiency of calcium and/or vitamin D in the diet or a lack of UVB light exposure. Affected reptiles typically present with functional and morphological bone changes.

 

Clinical signs

Clinical signs vary depending on the severity of the disease. In lizards, common clinical signs include softening of the mandible (rubber jaw), deformation of long bones, tetany, seizure-like activity, muscle tremors, decreased activity, constipation, and anorexia.

 

Diagnosis

In most cases, MBD is diagnosed based on clinical presentation and history of inappropriate diet and/or management. Radiography and blood examination are indicated to confirm the clinical suspicion, evaluate the severity of the disease and to determine a prognosis.

 

Treatment

In reptiles presented with acute hypocalcemic crisis, calcium should be administered by injection. Fluid therapy is also required in severe cases. In those with chronic MBD, oral supplementation with calcium along with husbandry and dietary modification are necessary. Note even if hypocalcemia is clinically resolved, deformed bones will remain deformed for the rest of the animal’s life.
