今回は、小鳥の鼻炎と副鼻腔炎の疾患についてお話しします。

小鳥の鼻炎と副鼻腔炎の病態

鼻腔および副鼻腔の炎症の原因は、細菌または真菌の感染、栄養の不均衡（ビタミンA欠乏）、アレルギー、異物、腫瘍、または外傷が考えられます。感染にかかりやすくする素因としてビタミンA欠乏、異物の吸入、化学物質やたばこの煙による刺激などが挙げられます。

小鳥の鼻炎と副鼻腔炎の臨床症状

最もよくみられる臨床症状には、くしゃみ、頭を振ること、鼻または眼の分泌物、口を開けての呼吸、眼の周囲の腫れ、そして元気なくなることや食欲不振などの非特異的な症状が含まれます。

小鳥の鼻炎と副鼻腔炎の診断

鼻炎および副鼻腔炎は臨床症状と身体検査によって仮診断がつけられますが、細菌感染を疑う場合病原細菌の種類を確定するためには鼻汁や鼻洗浄液の培養検査が必要です。クラミジアとマイコプラズマはPCRによる検査が可能です。頭部レントゲン検査は、鼻骨と軟部組織を評価するのに役立ちます。

小鳥の鼻炎と副鼻腔炎の治療

経口、点鼻、またはネブライジングでの抗生剤投薬による試験的な治療が一般的です。場合によって鼻洗浄は炎症細胞や異物の除去に役立つことがあります。栄養や環境を整えることも重要です。

Occurrence

Common causes of inflammation of nasal cavity and/or infraorbital sinus include infection of bacterial or fungal agents, nutritional imbalance (hypovitaminosis A), allergy, foreign bodies, neoplasia, and trauma. Most bacterial and fungal infections are usually secondary to other diseases of the nasal cavity and infraorbital sinus that predispose these structures to infection, such as hypovitaminosis A, foreign bodies, airborne toxins and irritants, developmental abnormalities, and neoplasia.

 

Clinical signs

The most common clinical signs include sneezing, head shaking, nasal or ocular discharge, open-mouthed breathing, periorbital swelling, and nonspecific signs like lethargy and reduced appetite. 

 

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of rhinitis and sinusitis can be easily made by clinical signs and physical examination. Microbiologic culture and serologic test (for Chlamydia psittaci) can help identify infectious micro-organisms and determine suitable antibiotics for treatment. Survey radiographs of the skull can be helpful in evaluating bony and soft tissue structures.

 

Treatment

Antibiotics or antifungals given by orally, topically, or nebulization will be needed to treat infections. Nasal and sinus lavage can be useful to remove inflammatory and foreign debris. Dietary modification may be necessary if hypovitaminosis A is considered as a predisposing factor. Exposure to irritants such as cigarette smoke should also be avoided.
