英語でのご紹介もいたします！　今回は、小鳥の鉛中毒についてお話しします。

小鳥の鉛中毒の病態

インコの鉛中毒は飼育下によく遭遇する疾患である。一般家庭内において鉛含有物質は多く存在し、それらの誤食することで鉛中毒が発生する。

摂取された鉛は腸管から吸収され、全身の組織に取り込まれ、色んな臓器に蓄積されます。

鉛の毒性はすべての組織に影響を与えます。特に血液、造血系、神経系、消化器系、腎臓への影響が強く、鳥では肝臓に対しても強い影響が認められます。

小鳥の鉛中毒の臨床症状

食欲と元気の喪失など非特異的な症状以外、溶血症状、消化器症状と神経症状がみられます。

便の濃緑色化と尿酸色の変化は溶血反応による所見です。神経症状として嘔吐、翼や頭部の振戦、姿勢の変化、脚麻痺がよくみられます。

小鳥の鉛中毒の診断

鉛中毒の特徴的な症状が見られる場合、鉛中毒が疑われます。消化管内に金属が存在する場合、X線写真に写られます。しかし、画像上に金属陰影が存在しなくても鉛中毒の可能性を否定することはできません。

確定診断には血中鉛濃度の測定が必要でありますが、多量の血液検体が必要なので小型インコでの検査は困難であります。

小鳥の鉛中毒の治療

原因療法のキレート剤による治療で劇的に回復することが多いです。対症療法や支持療法と併用し、全身状態の改善に努める必要があります。

 

【Lead poisoning in birds】

Occurrence

Lead poisoning frequently occur in pet birds and is caused by ingestion of particles of heavy metals. After absorption by the gastrointestinal tract, lead is widely distributed in soft tissues and its toxicity affects various organs and tissues, including red blood cells, liver, kidneys, hematopoietic, neurologic, and digestive systems.

Clinical signs

Besides nonspecific signs like lethargy and anorexia, gastrointestinal signs (e.g. extremely green stool, regurgitation, diarrhea), neurologic signs (e.g. ataxia, twitching, wings/head down posture, paresis), and urologic signs (e.g. polydipsia/polyuria, urate/urine color change) are also commonly observed.

Diagnosis

Lead poisoning can be suspected when above-mentioned typical signs are seen in clinic. Metal particles can be visualized on radiographs. However their absence does not rule out heavy metal toxicity. High concentration of lead in blood is needed for a definitive diagnosis, but it may be unrealistic since acquiring adequate blood sample for the test from small birds is generally difficult.

Treatment

Improvement of clinical signs can be rapidly noted once chelating agents are used. Medical care as well as intensive nursing care including nutritional support and fluid therapy play important roles in recovery.
