小鳥のかかりやすい病気「疥癬症」

今回は、小鳥の疥癬症についてお話しします。
小鳥の疥癬症の病態
飼育下の小鳥に一番よく認められる疥癬はトリヒゼンダニ（Knemidokoptes）属の節足動物であり、0.4×0.3mmくらい小さく肉眼では見えないダニです。トリヒゼンダニは鳥の皮膚に穴をあけ、宿主の体に長く離れられない生活環を持ち、鳥同士が接触することで伝播すると考えられます。飼い鳥の中ではセキセイインコによく見られます。その他の中小型インコやブンチョウなどにも時折報告があります。
小鳥の疥癬症の臨床症状
感染しても必ず症状が見られるわけではあるませんが、最初は顔(特に口角と眼の周囲)と脚に特徴的な軽石様の皮膚病変が認められ、重度となると嘴や爪の過長/変形や全身の皮膚感染による衰弱を起こすこともあります。痒みを伴う場合があります。
小鳥の疥癬症の診断
病変部の搔爬やテープスタンプ検査を行い、ダニやダニの卵を確認する。検出されない場合でも特徴的な病変と臨床症状であれば、試験的に治療を行われることもあります。
小鳥の疥癬症の治療
駆虫薬の経口投与や皮膚塗布で治療を行います。基本的に1-2週間の間隔で2回の投薬は有効ですが、重症例では3回以上繰り返しの投薬が必要です。場合によって虫卵が潜む角質の物理的な除去も投薬に合わせて実施します。

Occurrence
Knemidocoptiasis is one of the most commonly encountered ectoparasite in pet birds. It is caused by small manges of the genus Knemidocoptes and is most commonly seen in budgerigars, canaries, and finches. Knemidocoptes live on the skin of their hosts and can be spread by direct/indirect contact with infected birds.
Clinical signs
Characteristic honeycomb-like hyperkeratotic lesions can be observed on the beak, cere, and feet. With progression of disease, overgrowth and disfiguration of the beak and nails, systemic dermatitis and general weakness may be present in severe cases. Pruritus and irritation of skin can also be seen in some birds.
Diagnosis
The mange and/or its eggs can be identified through skin scraping and acetate tape preparation under microscopic examination. Sometimes in even with a negative result, tentative diagnosis can be made when characteristic clinical signs are present.
Treatment
Standard treatment protocol include orally or topically administration of the medication for at least twice, with a 1-2 week interval. Three or more times of treatment may be necessary depending on the improvement of clinical signs. In addition, removal of part of the hyperkeratotic skin can also help in severe cases.
